How Intensifier Pumps Help with Homogenization

Homogenization, also known as micronization, is the process of reducing the particle size of materials. This procedure is used in a multitude of industries, including pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, beverage, drug, and chemical. Homogenization has the ability to reduce the particle size of active ingredients, for example, to ensure a thorough and even dispersion, thus improving product quality while reducing costs.

Intensifier pumps are a critical component of high pressure homogenizers. These pumps work to drive the product through at a constant pressure, through fixed-geometry microchannels within the chamber. This high pressure results in high velocity, which creates high shear and impact forces that result in the desired particle size.

High pressure homogenizers that utilize intensifier pumps are useful for the following applications:

  • Nanodispersions
  • Nanoemulsions
  • Cell disruption
  • Microencapsulation in polymers, liposomes, and oils

BEE International offers a proprietary high pressure intensifier design that produces a constant pressure of up to 45,000 psi. Our pumping system offers a long life cycle, appropriate for any number of high volume industries, including biotech, pharmaceutical, and chemical operations. Our high pressure intensifier system offers hydraulically actuated intensifiers that are synchronized by a programmable logic controller to deliver constant pressure and flower through the homogenizing cell.

All of our high pressure intensifier pumps consist of three sections:

High Pressure Cylinder

Product enters our High Pressure (HP) cylinder and is later pushed out during the power stroke of the pump. This results in a process pressure that is higher than the hydraulic pressure.

Isolator

The isolator holds the hydraulic and high pressure cylinders together, all while preventing cross contamination between the hydraulic and product fluids.

Hydraulic Cylinder

The hydraulic cylinder is powered by a hydraulic power unit, or HPU. Pressurized oil works to push the hydraulic piston, which allows the piston to reciprocate.

Our high pressure homogenizers feature a state of the art high pressure intensifier system that offers countless benefits, including the following:

  • Durable, built-to-last high pressure seals that can withstand a variety of solvents and emulsions
  • 5 different hydraulic cylinder sizes
  • 3 different high pressure cylinder sizes
  • Pressure and flow capacity at any range up to 45,000psi
  • Automatic seal cleaning function that allows for unmatched cleanliness
  • Vertically oriented intensifiers in all production units over 2 LPM
  • Variable intensifier speed
  • Ability to handle highly viscous material
